basics
I’m a freelance software developer based in Dresden, capital of Saxony, Germany.
I finished studies of industrial engineering in 2004. If you really want, you can have a look at my (german) thesis. It’s about a custom WebDAV server implementation in Java, targetting special CD/DVD Jukebox Hardware.
Since the beginning of 2008 I’m self-employed full time - don’t hesitate to hire me if you’re in need of somebody proficient in Ruby, Rails and/or related technologies.
skills
I build web applications since the year 2000. I came across lots of different technologies and languages since then, including but not limited to Ruby, Java (J2EE, Spring, WebObjects), Perl (Mason, Catalyst), PL/SQL, .Net and PHP.
For the past several years I focused on web development with Ruby on Rails, and, more recently, JRuby (on Rails, of course ;-)).
Along the way I’ve gained quite good knowledge of the Lucene full text search library, and, later on, of Ferret, Dave Balmain’s great port of Lucene to C/Ruby.
I’m test-addicted because tests saved me from seriously breaking things more than once. I appreciate standards conformant markup, and I’m quite fluent in Javascript. Of course I also know my way around the usual relational databases - MySQL, PostgreSQL and a bit of Oracle.
work history
Freelance work
I work on Rails projects in a self-employed way since 2006. Here are some of them:
- The Nag - This is an ongoing project of Anti-Apathy introducing people to ways for making their lifestyles more sustainable. Rails-based, of course.
- chinadialogue.net - Working for openDemocracy I helped to integrate some new features into this interesting bi-lingual Rails site.
- omdb.org - During late 2006 I helped to polish up this great movie portal for it’s launch. It’s Rails based, and we use Ferret for the site-wide search and for input assistance in many places.
Working at webit!
Since the year 2000 I’ve been working at webit!. Among the more recent projects I was involved with are:
- A quite large JRuby on Rails project that’s soon to be launched :-)
- sachsen-gesetze.de - Rails-powered e-commerce site
- enviatel.de - Perl/Mason based customer portal of the saxon telecommunication company envia TEL with things like online orders and services around existing contracts.
- vvo-online.de - the web site of Upper Elbe Regional Transport including various travel information and schedule services. Runs on .NET, has been developed with Mono on Linux :-) Built a custom MVC framework for this one to make .NET suck less.
Other stuff
See the projects section for more information about some other projects of mine.
